Friday prayer at the masjid
Jummah in the masjid.
What to expect from Friday prayer at the masjid, why every masjid's jamat time is a little different, and how to find the current Jumma time at a masjid near you.
Jummah in the masjid is the Friday congregational prayer: worshippers gather before the adhan, the imam gives the khutbah (sermon), and the congregation prays two rak'ah together. Each masjid sets its own jamat time within the valid window after midday — so times differ between masjids. To find the current Jumma time at a masjid near you, use the free Takbeer Time app.
What happens during Jummah in the masjid
A typical Jumma at the masjid follows a clear order. Worshippers arrive early and pray voluntary rak'ah. At the appointed time the muezzin calls the adhan, and the imam stands to deliver the khutbah — a sermon in two parts separated by a brief sitting. The khutbah is part of the prayer itself, which is why arriving before it begins matters. After the khutbah, the iqamah is called and the congregation prays two rak'ah behind the imam.
Why every masjid's Jummah time is different
- Each committee chooses its time. Within the valid window after midday, a masjid picks a start time that suits its congregation — workers, students, families.
- The window moves with the season. Because Jumma replaces Dhuhr, the earliest valid time drifts through the year.
- Big masjids hold several Jummahs. To fit large or shift-working communities, many masjids run a second and third Jummah congregation.
So two masjids a few streets apart can start Jumma 30–45 minutes apart, and the same masjid can differ from one month to the next. That is exactly why a generic timetable is not enough.
How to find the Jummah time at a masjid near you
